Class Description: Learn all the basic principles of using the LCC schedules, choosing class numbers, creating cutters, and shelflisting for your local collection. Also provides an introduction to a few special LCC conventions for time periods, authors, artists, and sacred works. (A basic understanding of cataloging practice and standards, including RDA and MARC21, is recommended. Does not cover classification for legal, musical, or cartographic works.)

  1. Understand the basic structure and organization of Library of Congress Classification (LCC).
  2. Learn how to navigate the LCC schedules.
  3. Understand each element of the call number.
  4. Learn how to choose/create each element of the call number based on the subject heading and other information in the resource description.
  5. Develop some familiarity with classifying resources based on time period, as well as classification of literary, artistic, and sacred works.

Prerequisites: A basic understanding of RDA and MARC.


  • 6 Library Education Units (LEUs) for Indiana library staff
  • 6 Contact hours for all other library staff
  • 6 SCECHs for Michigan school library staff
  • 6 PGPs for Indiana school library staff

  • The login and preparation email for the workshop will be sent prior to the training date

Note: To fully participate in the workshop, you will need to be able to access the webinar presentation via the Zoom link provided in the login and preparation email. Also, you will need access to the class materials via the Google Drive link provided in the login and preparation email. Finally, please plan to open and monitor chat within the Zoom meeting. Being able to view the presentation, view and possibly print the class materials, and participate in chat will lead to the most positive workshop experience. For Groups: The Zoom presentation and chat should be visible to all group attendees. The class materials link should be shared with group attendees ahead of time so everyone can access the class materials.
