Class Description: This workshop is a “must have” for future MeLCat libraries and new cataloging/Technical Services staff at current ones. Learn or review the basics of cataloging and the application of MARC to them. Learn about MeLCat guidelines to ensure MeLCat participant records are successfully loaded and properly matched against existing records in the statewide MeLCat catalog. A review of important MeLCat terminology precedes a thorough discussion of the matching algorithm and validity checks employed by the MeLCat central server.

Also covered: how to review MARC records and understand descriptive cataloging concepts and MARC coding for various formats. A review of the various tools used to assist catalogers with record creation, such as OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards, is included. A brief discussion of RDA records and how RDA affects the matching algorithm concludes the course.

The MeL project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan.

Audience: Staff of MI MeLCat libraries
