Class Description: This three-day workshop provides a practical introduction to cataloging music materials, including printed scores and sound recordings. Designed for catalogers who may have little or no musical background, the course focuses on the unique aspects of music cataloging using current RDA, MARC 21, and Music Library Association best practices.

The instruction will cover the description of notated music and sound recordings, including fixed fields, extent statements, music-specific identifiers, and carrier characteristics. Participants will learn to apply core controlled vocabularies—LCSH, LCGFT, and LCMPT—as well as search for and supply authorized access points for musical works according to RDA and LC-PCC policy statements. The course will also address evaluating and editing copy cataloging records, with guidance on determining when a record is “close enough” versus when it needs enhancement.

No prior knowledge of music theory is required.

Prerequisites:

The ability to read music would be helpful but is not required.

6 SCECHs for Michigan school library staff
6 PGPs for Indiana school library staff

For Groups:

Only one person (the group contact who registered or the person they designate) is allowed to join the Zoom meeting
This person should project their screen to the group attendees so that the Zoom presentation and chat are visible to all
This person should share the class materials link with the group attendees prior to the workshop so they are able to view the materials on their own device. Materials may also be printed ahead of time if desired.
